Caryn Baumgartner resides in Long Beach, California and works from her home studio. Her work is primarily figurative and employs a variety of mediums including oil, wax and charcoal. Her approach is both spontaneous and instinctive, allowing subject matter and composition to evolve over time. She is very interested in surface quality and frequently carves, scratches or draws into the work, scraping away and building back up until the final form is revealed. Ultimately, the abstracting of image and form over time reveals traces of these explorations woven throughout the final image.
"This world is but a canvas to our imagination"
- Henry David Thoreau
